Instead of hoping to find moments to squeeze enjoyment in in between appointments and tasks, I propose organizing happiness. While it might sound counter-intuitive, sometimes scheduling fun is the only way to make time for good times.
Here are some ways that I keep my bliss on track:
- Add my favorite weekend activities (like food festivals, yoga classes, art exhibits, etc.) to my Google calendar. I can't always recall which Sunday of the month the Rose Bowl Flea Market is on, so I help myself out and set a reminder.
- Create a list of the things that I enjoy most and remember to make them a priority when doling out my free time. This tool really helps me in weighing my commitments.
- Utilize the app Coach.me to set goals and help me keep up my meditation practice. One of the areas you can select is even called Improve Happiness and Relationships; it has goals like "Spend Time Outside", "Write Three Positive Things About Today", and "Watch a TED Talk". If your happy-place is the gym, there's a reminder for that too. You can also personalize goals and customize the reminders according to day and time.
Don't let "life" get in the way of your happiness! Organize your happiness.
